Post Derby 2008

If you read my picks before the race, they were obviously meant for mud. Big Brown ran a very big race from the 20 hole running four or five wide the whole way and was much the best. Eight Belles, I can’t say enough about how good she ran and to have such a tragedy after the race was unbelievable. There has been a lot of discussion about dirt verses artificial surface, but I absolutely do not feel the track was at fault whatsoever.

I think Big Brown could be a Triple Crown winner and I don’t see any challengers waiting in the wings for him. He will have to beat himself. Racing could use a Triple Crown winner and it is very good that UPS has jumped in with some corporate sponsorship. After the tragedy with the filly the focus needs to go elsewhere.

Friday’s weather was a bit rough, but Saturday was picture perfect. I hope your Derby was profitable.

There is a big pick six carry over ($410,599) this Wednesday after Derby as there is every year and Wednesdays card is usually pitiful, as it is this year. There is also a bet called the Super Hi Five where you have to (pick the first five horses in order) in the last race. That Carry over is $331,000. You have plenty of time to handicap these two bets, so get busy!

  1. If anyone is lucky enough to hit the Pick 6 on Wednesday, they should take some of the $$s and go with Mike to the Maryland 2 year old in training sale this weekend! Kip Deville and Big Truck were parchased out of that sale. rtp
