Rain and Thunderstorms

The weather is finally starting to break here. It has made it above freezing and we have had  rain and thunderstorms this afternoon and now we are a sea of mud. The fields are beat to death. Hoping for some sun and warmer drying weather this week as promised. I have been going back and forth to Arkansas every week to ten days. It was 65 degrees and sunny over the weekend while I was there,  after an entire week of no racing due to the frozen track and poor weather conditions. Then we have the great all weather Turfway Park, which froze last week. Yes we had bad weather, however Beulah Park which is 100 miles north and has a dirt surface, ran all week and had worse weather overall. From what I understand, the guy just kept mixing the snow in (instead of scraping it off) and it froze in layers. At a meeting the other day, he told the horseman he would do the same all over again if circumstances were the same. He said the weather was the problem, and not his care of the track. Hmmm??

The gambling bill doesn’t look very good in Kentucky this year, but the governor says it is not dead. Whether they have a late plan, who knows. We should know something in the next few weeks. The papers says that some legislators are holding back on it as they don’t want it to get mixed up with the Mitch McConnell race, which is very important. But that is politics, so who knows. It really doesn’t sound good for the horseman.

Over 150 horses have been claimed at  Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs so far this meet. They have raised the purses and they have claiming friendly rules as your horse is only in jail for 21 days. The people genuinely like racing and have fun.

Only 75 days until The Kentucky Derby.

TWO YEARS OLDS OF 2013

We started in January of 2013 with fourteen Two Year Olds and acquired an additional two during the summer. In June we knew four of them were not going to run until they were three. We ran the remaining twelve of the sixteen with two of the twelve only making one start. Of the remaining ten, five broke their maidens (four in maiden special) and one (MISTER POLLARD) winning and placing in Stakes Races with earnings of $128,584 and is one of the leading contenders for Indiana Bred Two Year Old Colt for 2013.  The total earnings for the 2013 Two Year Olds were $294,684. We have higher hopes for them as next years three year olds.

REVIEW OF 2013

According to the Equibase Trainer Statistics, Mike was ranked 155th out of over 6600 trainers in North America, with 46 wins and purse money totaling $1,339,320. Six of the wins were in Stakes Races, two seconds and five thirds. On July 17th the stable had its biggest single day of racing winning three stakes and over $225,000 in purse money. We had set our goal at 50 wins and $1.5 in purse money for 2013 and got close. We will once again shoot for those goals in 2014.

Another major highlight of 2013 was when homebred DREAMIN BIG won her second stakes win of the year at TurfwayPark on December 7th in the Holiday Inaugural, fillies and mares going three quarters. She has won over a $522,000 in total lifetime earnings.

Many thanks go out to our employees at the track and at the farm and to our owners who entrust us with their horses which makes this all possible.

We are going to run a few at Turfway Park over the winter, but mostly we will be at Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs, Arkansas. It is a great little spot and you should come down sometime this meet, especially if you have never been. The weather is a good month ahead of Louisville and for the most part very pleasant. Racing is good and there is plenty to do in town. Fishing is exceptional.
